Foster and adoptive children often face unique challenges and opportunities in their lives. One crucial aspect they should be aware of is the significance of making wise choices that can impact their reputation. Background checks are a part of their future, and it's crucial to help them understand that the decisions they make today can influence their future success. What's even more important to consider is that these children may not have been modeled or taught this importance in the past. Understanding the Significance of Choices

  • Long-term Impact: Many of these children may not have had role models who emphasized the long-term impact of choices. Therefore, it's essential to explain that every decision they make can have lasting consequences, for better or worse. 


  • Building Reputation: Foster and adoptive children may not have had the opportunity to learn that their reputation is like a valuable asset. They should understand that they have the power to shape a positive reputation through their choices. 


  • Responsibility: Teach them about personal responsibility, recognizing that this may be a new concept for them. Help them understand that they are in control of their decisions and that taking responsibility for their actions is a sign of maturity. 


The Connection to Background Checks 


Background checks are a part of the foster and adoption process and often delve into the foster parent's history and the child's history and behaviors as well. Foster and adoptive children should recognize the connection between their choices and these checks, even if they haven't been taught about it previously: 


  • Transparency: Encourage openness about their past, recognizing that they may not have been taught the importance of current life changing decisions that become available shared personal history for employers, colleges or anyone who wants to know if you can be trusted. Let them know that background checks aim to ensure their safety and well-being, and understanding this can lead to more transparent discussions. 


  • Reputation Maintenance: Explain that maintaining a good reputation by making wise choices can positively impact the outcome of these checks. For example, social workers and potential caregivers are looking at background checks for parents who can be trusted to be safe caregivers. Children probably weren't informed of this fact and they can be taught to think twice when faced with life and reputation altering decisions. 


  • Empowerment: Teach them that by making informed choices, they can actively contribute to shaping their future. This empowerment can lead to increased self-esteem and confidence. 


Preparation for Future Success 


Recognizing that many foster and adoptive children may not have been taught the importance of their choices, it becomes even more crucial to prepare them for success: 


  • Goal Setting: Encourage them to set goals for their future, even if they haven't been guided in this way before. Help them understand that the choices they make today can either support or hinder their progress toward those goals. 


  • Conflict Resolution: Teach them conflict resolution and problem-solving skills, recognizing that these skills may be new to them. These skills will enable them to make better choices when faced with difficult situations. 


  • Self-Reflection: Encourage regular self-reflection, even if they haven't been encouraged to do so in the past. Help them analyze their choices and their consequences, fostering a habit of learning from their experiences. 


Empowering foster and adoptive children to make informed and responsible choices is a vital part of preparing them for their future. By helping them understand the link between their decisions, their reputation, and the role of background checks, we equip them with the knowledge and skills they need to navigate life's challenges successfully. These children may not have had the guidance they needed in the past, but with support and encouragement, they can confidently shape their own path to a brighter and more promising future.
